Getting to Sun Valley

You have imagined a trip to Idaho’s mountains for years. Your summer trip might include hiking endless trails, a picnic while listening to the Sun Valley Summer Symphony, or 9 holes of golf at the White Clouds. An adventure in the winter might involve skiing Warm Springs Face on Baldy, snowshoeing at the Sun Valley Nordic Center, or a sleigh ride to dinner at Trail Creek Cabin. You have explored the perfect vacation rental property because staying in a hotel just won’t cut it. You have perused what to do in and around town. You are on your way – but, are you? Traveling to Sun Valley can be easier than you think. Here is what we know.

The Friedman Memorial Airport (SUN) in Hailey is a quick 15 minutes from Ketchum and Sun Valley, Idaho. Since 1932, SUN has served the resort communities of the Wood River Valley with scheduled commercial flights starting in August 1960. And, we are so glad they did! Airlines servicing the SUN airport are Alaska, Delta, and United Airlines. There are non-stop flights from major hubs: Portland (PDX), Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO), Seattle (SEA), Chicago (ORD), and Denver (DEN). Boise International Airport (BOI) and Salt Lake City Airport (SLC) also offer flights to Sun Valley. Whether booking a connecting flight or a direct flight from a major hub, getting to Sun Valley just gets easier and easier. While some flights are offered year-round, some are seasonal. It is best to check with the airlines well ahead of time, so you are good to go.

What if you like to drive? You can do that too! Folks do fly to Boise, Salt Lake, or the Magic Valley Regional Airport (TWF) in Twin Falls. And, rental car options are endless. Whether driving I-84 from Salt Lake, north on Highway 75 from Twin Falls, or meandering the mountain pass from Boise, you will be surrounded by views, views, views. But, be careful. Depending on the time of year, there could be wildlife crossing, snow storms moving in, or snow drifts closing roads. Stay aware of road closures, construction, and conditions. Check in with Idaho Transportation Department Highway Information at their website .
