A Kid Friendly Idaho Vacation!
You just booked a fantastic family trip in Sun Valley, Idaho! You reserved the perfect vacation home. You booked your flights. You rented an SUV. You are anticipating an action-packed getaway chock-full of hiking, mountain biking, fly-fishing, and golf. Your nights will be draped in excellent restaurants and strolls through downtown Ketchum's boutiques and art galleries. You are ready for a vacation under a bright, blue Idaho sky.
But, wait – what about the kids? How will they embrace Idaho? What is there for them to do, to learn, or to explore? We are glad you asked. The answer is simply EVERYTHING! For kids, Sun Valley is nothing short of spectacular. Here is what we know.
Summer fun means summer camp! Right? Right! And, in Sun Valley, there are several camps providing entertainment and adventure on a drop-in daily basis or by the week. Camp is available for kids three years of age and older. Activities for the preschoolers might include story time, a trip to the splash park, catching butterflies, painting rocks and supervised free play. Camps for children seven years and older might include day trips to Redfish Lake, tennis, skateboarding or swimming lessons, as well as mountain biking, golf or baseball. There are one-day pottery classes, fly-fishing clinics, week-long theater camps, and performances. A quick look at our THINGS TO DO tab will provide some details and direction perfect for your little traveler.
Interested in something kid-friendly and out of the afternoon sun? Ketchum’s Community Library is a haven for families. There are weekly story time sessions with or without yoga. There is Science Time and Paws to Read. There is a summer reading program, an occasional pizza party, and an abundance of books, videos, computers, and overall fun! Activities are age-appropriate and entirely family-friendly. Supervision depends on your child’s age. The Children’s Library hours are Monday – Saturday from 10 AM – 6 PM. Have a look at The Community Library’s calendar online to choose the activity right for your child.
Want to cool off? If the complex in which you are staying does not have access to a pool, the local YMCA on Warm Springs Road is the ticket! Capable swimmers will enjoy the lazy river and the giant slide while toddlers play with their parents under the play structures in the splash pool. There are lifeguards, and lounge chairs scattered poolside. The YMCA offers exercise classes and equipment, rock climbing, basketball courts, and a state of the art solar powered greenhouse. There is a music studio recording facility, and so much more. Supervision and age guidelines keep everyone safe. A quick call to the Y will answer all your questions: 208-928-YMCA.
What about a movie? It's lights! Camera! Action! Ketchum has two movie houses each with a few theaters. The Magic Lantern is on 100 East 2nd Street while the Screening Rooms are around the corner on 1st Avenue North. The Sun Valley Opera House, located in the Sun Valley Mall, has one large theater. On Main Street in Hailey, the Big Wood 4 Cinemas offers current flicks and multiple viewing rooms.
Does your child want to explore town alone? Of course! Bike rentals are available at the Elephant’s Perch (208-726-3497) on Sun Valley Road or Sturtevant’s (208-726-4501) and Backwoods Mountain Sports (208-726-8818) on Main Street. With miles of bike path to explore, you cannot go wrong.
They can bike to the skate park, the Y, the ice skating rink, or to Ketchum's Town Square to enjoy a scoop of ice cream or a lemonade.
What about after 5 PM? We get it. An adults-only night on the town is in order. You want a fantastic candlelit dinner with a bottle of wine, or maybe a gourmet picnic at the Sun Valley Summer Symphony. You need a sitter. Sun Valley Super Sitter provides responsible, adult babysitters that are qualified and vetted. You can hire for a day, a night, or for the length of your stay. Keeping your kids supervised and engaged in healthy activities is what they do. Reserving ahead of time is a great idea. Call: 208-788-5080 or email: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Whether your little traveler explores an adventure camp, dons western attire for Wagon Days, or cruises the bike trail, kids love Idaho as there is never a dull moment. After all, Sun Valley caters to kids of all ages. Don’t you agree?
